Setup Virtual Desktops in Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7

OK so most of us know that Apple OSX and Linux have had Multiple Virtual Desktops for years now. I thought about it and just couldn’t work out why this feature was not available in Microsoft Windows as standard.

After a little hunting around I did find a lightweight program that does the job. It’s actually a free download on the Microsoft TechNet site called Desktops.

Desktops allows you to organize your applications on up to four virtual desktops. Read email on one, browse the web on the second, and do work in your productivity software on the third, without the clutter of the windows you’re not using. After you configure hotkeys for switching desktops, you can create and switch desktops either by clicking on the tray icon to open a desktop preview and switching window, or by using the hotkeys.

Virtual Desktop Setup Virtual Desktops in Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7

Using Desktops
Unlike other virtual desktop utilities that implement their desktops by showing the windows that are active on a desktop and hiding the rest, Sysinternals Desktops uses a Windows desktop object for each desktop. Application windows are bound to a desktop object when they are created, so Windows maintains the connection between windows and desktops and knows which ones to show when you switch a desktop. That making Sysinternals Desktops very lightweight and free from bugs that the other approach is prone to where their view of active windows becomes inconsistent with the visible windows.

Desktops reliance on Windows desktop objects means that it cannot provide some of the functionality of other virtual desktop utilities, however. For example, Windows doesn’t provide a way to move a window from one desktop object to another, and because a separate Explorer process must run on each desktop to provide a taskbar and start menu, most tray applications are only visible on the first desktop. Further, there is no way to delete a desktop object, so Desktops does not provide a way to close a desktop, because that would result in orphaned windows and processes. The recommended way to exit Desktops is therefore to logoff.

Nintendo's New Zelda Game Soars Skyward on Nov. 20

2011-08-17

Nintendo's celebration of the 25th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda™ series continues in full force with the announcement that The Legend of Zelda™: Skyward Sword will launch in North America on Nov. 20. The epic adventure, created from the ground up for the Wii™ console, sends this storied series to new heights and marks a turning point for the franchise.

The game uses the precision motion controls of the Wii Remote™ Plus (or a Wii Remote controller with a Wii MotionPlus™ accessory) and Nunchuk™ controllers to map on-screen action to the player's movements. When a player swings the Wii Remote Plus controller, Link™ appears to swing his sword in exactly the same way.

Different enemies have different battle tactics, so players must analyze their approach and develop counterattacks that play on the enemies' weaknesses. The game's wide array of items also use full motion controls, letting players roll bombs, shoot arrows and guide flying objects like never before.

The game includes a massive, multilayered world that takes players from dark dungeons to a diverse overworld to cloud cities in the sky, requiring a combination of puzzle-solving and swordplay to unlock all of its secrets. Link soars through the air on the wings of a majestic bird while exploring the game's sky area, providing players with unprecedented freedom of movement as they progress on their adventure. The quest lays the foundation for the events in The Legend of Zelda™: Ocarina of Time™, which is frequently cited as one of the greatest video games of all time.

"The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is the biggest game in the series yet," said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. "We've just scratched the surface of this massive experience, and we look forward to sharing additional details with fans as we approach the Nov. 20 launch."

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is now available for pre-order at major retailers throughout North America. A deposit may be required for pre-orders. See individual retailers for details. For more information about the game, visit http://www.zelda.com/skywardsword/.

Remember that Wii features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other features, visit http://www.nintendo.com/wii.

Installing ClockworkMod on the Huawei U8800 / Ideos X5

ClockworkMod is a must for anyone running an Android Powered Phone or Tablet. Its a great safety net for when you start Installing Custom ROMs and/or Themes.

ClockworkMod allows you to:

Install Custom ROMs and Themes (from .zip files)Wipe Data / Factory ResetWipe Cache PartitionBackup and Restore Current Partitions (ROM)Clear Battery StatsWipe Dalvik CachePartition SD CardFix File Permissions

Once installed ClockworkMod instantly adds the above features to your device, which to me are essential.

ClockworkMod 4.0.0.5 Installing ClockworkMod on the Huawei U8800 / Ideos X5

Installing ClockworkMod on the Huawei U8800 / Ideos X5:

Download ClockworkMod Recovery 4.0.0.5 – Download Here.Power on your U8800 while holding the VOL+ and VOL- buttons, your screen should turn Pink or Similar Colour.Plug the phone into your computer, after a minute or so you should see a new disk drive in My Computer.Browse the new disk drive on your computer and look for a file called recovery.img, you need to back this up to a safe place.Extract the new recovery.img file you downloaded in the first step and replace the existing one which you have found.Once complete you will need to remove the battery from your phone to turn it off.Congratulations you should now have ClockworkMod installed on your Huawei U8800 / Ideos X5, to load ClockworkMod you simply need to hold VOL+ while powering on the phone.

The first thing I would do in ClockworkMod is create a backup (you need an SD Card for this) then exit ClockworkMod, your phone will load as normal.

You now have the freedom to install Custom ROMs and Themes, just remember to backup in ClockworkMod before installing anything new.

If you have any questions or comments please post them below and I will do my best to help.

Smart WordPress 404 Redirect

One of the most annoying things when navigating a website is to click on a link and be faced with a “404 Page Not Found” page, or maybe you click on a link in Google search results and get the same error message.

This is a very simple problem to fix if you are running a WordPress Site, it involves editing one file and that is it. It should take about 30 seconds if you know what you are doing.

Once complete if anyone visits a page on your WordPress Site that no longer exists they will be forwarded back to your homepage automatically.

How to setup the Smart WordPress 404 Redirect:

Edit the following file:
wp-content/themes/YOUR-THEME/404.php

Delete everything in the file and paste the following:
header("HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently");
header("Location: ".get_bloginfo('url'));
exit();
?>

That’s it, you can test it by typing in a URL for your site that you know does not exist. It should forward you straight back to your homepage.

How simple is that! Any problems or questions please post them below.

How to use FaceTime over 3G on your iPhone 4

One of the great new features of the iPhone 4 is the ability to video call using FaceTime. The down side to FaceTime is the fact you can only use it if you are connected to a WiFi network.

This is the way Apple wants it to work, but there is now a way to override this to allow you to use FaceTime over 3G, it’s easy enough to setup too but it does involve you Jailbreaking your iPhone.

Just a quick reminder that if you Jailbreak your iPhone you will void your warranty, but if you still want to use FaceTime over 3G continue reading.

Using FaceTime over 3G Setup Instructions:

Firstly you need to Jailbreak your iPhone 4.You then need to download the Cydia app called My3G, it will cost you $3.99 but worth every penny. The My3G app will make your iPhone believe it is on Wi-Fi even when it’s using 3G.Use FaceTime as normal from any location, even if WiFi is not available.

It really is as simple as that, but the one thing you have to remember is your monthly download limit over 3G which most phone operators have in place.

So just to give you rough idea of how much of your data allowance you will use remember the following……..a 5 minute FaceTime call with lots of movement” uses about 14.7 megabytes of data, or about three megabytes per minute.

I hope this has helped iPhone 4 users get a little more out of FaceTime, if you have any questions or comments please post them below.

Android Theme – Black Magic for Huawei U8800 / Ideos X5

Well I have had an Android Powered phone since October last year and since then it has been a very steep learning curve when it comes to Rooting, Flashing, Unlocking and all the other modifications you can do with Android Devices.

I thought I would have a go at creating my own Android Theme for the ROM I am currently using which is FLB Custom ROM, which seems to be the most stable for my device.

To try this theme you will need to have a Huawei U8800 / Ideos X5 with ClockworkMod installed. I used the files from the B137 Firmware (Android 2.2.2) to create the theme, but the theme should work with all 2.2 ROMs for the Huawei U8800 / Ideos X5. Just make sure you backup in ClockworkMod before installing this theme.

How to get an Apple OSX Style Dock in Windows

One thing I like about the Apple OSX Operating System is the Dock which is on the bottom of the OSX Desktop. I find it easy to navigate and customise.

As much as I like the Apple OSX Dock I just can’t justify spending huge sums of money on a Mac. This is when I started looking for a Windows Alternative, this led me to RocketDock.

RocketDock is a great FREE Application that has all if not more functions of the Apple OSX Dock, but is designed to run in Windows. It provides a nice clean interface to drop shortcuts on for easy access and organisation. With each item completely customisable there is no end to what you can add and launch from the dock.

Features:

Minimize windows to the dockReal-time window previews in VistaRunning application indicatorsSimple drag-n-drop interfaceMulti-monitor supportSupports alpha-blended PNG and ICO iconsIcons zoom and transition smoothlyAuto-hide and Popup on mouse overPositioning and layering optionsFully customizableCompletely PortableObjectDock Docklet supportCompatible with MobyDock, ObjectDock, RK Launcher, and Y’z Dock skinsRuns great on slower computersUnicode compliantSupports many languages and can easily be translated

On the RocketDock website it states that it is not compatible with 64bit Operating Systems, but I am running it fine on Windows 7 x64, so see how you get on.
